Westport Lions Roar

On Saturday, May 27, a crew of Lions between 69 and 80 years of age worked straight from 9:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. putting in the swimming buoys and cleaning the beach.
The supports holding the buoys over the winter months unfortunately broke causing the buoys to get tangled. Lions Jim McGlade and Bill Garland are to be commended for their perseverance in untangling buoy lines. They then braved the chilly water to place the buoys.
The rest of the crew were busy raking the lawn, planting grass seed and clearing the beach of debris. The Westport Lions Beach is located at the eastern end of Westport Sand Lake and is subject to the prevailing westerly winds that result in large amounts of seaweed and debris washing up on its shores. The beach is cleaned daily during the summer months.
The picnic tables are out, and the beach is ready for public use. The washrooms will be open later after the club fixes some plumbing problems.
The club thanks volunteers Jeannette Harper and Pat Reddick for organizing a Lions’ yard sale held at the beach on May 20. Smokey Sherwood was a big help in setting up tables and assisting as needed.
On June 3, the Westport Lions will participate at EcoFest at Soho’s site. The environment is one of the five international pillars of service for Lions. The others are vision, hunger, diabetes, and childhood cancer. The Lions’s display will focus on the three environmental initiatives of the club, the Reuse and Recycle Centre, the community garden and Pitch-In. Lion members will be available to answer questions about the club and to collect eyeglasses for Ghana.
On Sunday, June 4, Wayne Bent, Jim McGlade, Dorothy Maynard and Bob Reddick will attend District A4 learning workshops held in Perth. The sessions include information on being president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and director. Afternoon workshops will include Lion orientation, planning successful projects, club membership and club dynamics.
