Westport Lions Roar

Luckily the rain held off until after the Canada Day festivities at the Westport Lions Beach. The focus was on young people with music, stick-on tattoos, Canada flag pins, a face painter, beach toys, games, and free hotdogs, drinks and freezies provided by Ragu Sharma, manager of Circle K in Westport.

This year, the Westport Lions Club added two new events as part of the club’s Canada Day celebrations.

Children in our community were asked to draw what Canada meant to them.  We had an excellent response to the contest.  Over 60 drawings were received, and the judges had a tough time selecting the top three in each age category.

The winners in each age category are:

Age four and five – Meeka Bell and Anna Purdon

Age six – Grace Monster, Jack McNichols, and Ajax Lee

Age seven – Hadley Lynn, Sarah Bardales, and Maci Rae Dawson

Age eight – Everly, Emma McNichols, and Charlie Sitchon

Age nine – Avery Biscaro, Isaac Bardales, and Alexis Korenis

Over ten – Maria Korenis, Hailey Smith, and Imogen Roberts

All the winners were contacted by telephone to inform them that they can collect their prize, a free kiddie ice-cream cone courtesy of Vanilla Bean on Main Street.  The Westport Lions Club wish to thank Vanilla Bean for donating all 20 prizes.

The other new event was the Canada Aye bale rolling contest.  This game was enjoyed by all.  Prizes were given to all participants.

The winner of the Westport Lions $1500 Cash Draw is Cathy McBride from Westport.  The $500 second prize went to Clem Tinan.  Denise Tobin of Westport won the 50-50 draw worth $170.00.

The clean up crew found a man’s watch.  To claim it please call 613-273-5789 and leave a message or e-mail the club at westportontariolions@gmail.com.

The day brought an abundance of smiles to so many people, it made one feel proud to be a Canadian and part of the community.
