Today, women are the fastest-growing segment of Lions, with more than 425,000 women serving around the world. Women were first allowed to join Lions Clubs International in 1987. The first women to join the Westport Lions was in 2015.
On June 28, the Westport Lions inducted Dorothy Maynard as their new president, their first woman in this role and their longest-serving female member.
President Dorothy drove a school bus for 35 years, and after retiring, she thought she could use those skills by volunteering to assist others through the Lions Mobility Medical Service. Her favourite Lion activity is still driving the mobility vans. Lion Maynard was keen to expand her service after learning about all the different programs the Westport Lions are involved in, so she asked to join the club in 2017. “I like the way the Lions Club helps members of the community and beyond,” says Lion Dorothy, “and I want to help support that in any way I can.”
Dorothy has steadily expanded her involvement in club activities. She has chaired the club’s $1,500 Spring Draw and $10,000 Elimination Draw. Lion Maynard has a regular weekly shift cleaning the washrooms and the beach with the tractor. Dorothy is always willing to represent the club at such activities as Remembrance Day and the Christmas market. The club can count on Dorothy to sell tickets and help where needed like cleaning the clubhouse.
Lion Dorothy has the full support of the membership which was evident by a standing ovation she received when inducted as president. When you see Dorothy about town, please make sure you congratulate her.
