Westport Lions Roar
By Lion Bill Garland
Tuesday evening October 31st was cloudy and dark, a perfect recipe for Halloween Trick or Treating. For over 50 years the Westport Lions have participated in Bewitching and Treating the kids of Westport and area on Halloween night. Eight Westport Lions and a couple of volunteers arrived on Church St., in front of the Seasons store, at 5 pm with a Lions Mobility Van full of bags of treats and decorations. The team led by Lion Kris Klatt and Donna Garland got busy decorating the area. They did a fabulous job decorating the treat distribution tables, the Mobility Van and pumpkins positioned around the area.
Lion Michael Harris brought a sound system that blasted out Halloween appropriate music all evening long. The music could be heard around the village and helped draw treaters to our location. Lion Dave Lowery dressed up in the Paw Patrol costume of Chase. Chase was a big hit with the young people. Most of the treaters were drawn to Chase and many wanted pictures taken with him. The presence of Chase motivated many of the families to linger at our location as the young ones talked to Chase and had pictures taken.
Our Lions group was very impressed with the costumes this year. A young child dressed as a skunk, stole our hearts. Another child dressed as Chase was so pleased to see our Chase. Look mom its me, he said. It was also notable that there were more parents dressed in costume than other years. Well done parents!
The Lions team served out treats to close to 250 treaters. We would like to thank Tanya’s No Frills in Kingston (Division St.), Metro Store Perth and Barnabe’s Your Independent Perth for supplying treats for the children of Westport this year. Their generosity is appreciated.
The Westport community seemed to have a good time at the Lions stop and the Westport Lions members thoroughly enjoyed the evening.
Thanks Westport!
