Westport Lions Roar
By Lion Bob Reddick
Like many families, the Lions and their volunteers are busy during the summer, hosting events, preparing meals, enjoying the beach and helping out neighbours.
The club is fortunate to have a group of volunteers who generously donate their time to help Lion members without seeking any remuneration or recognition.
One of these volunteers, Charlie Norwood, donated his time and machinery to limb the club’s huge maple tree, ensuring the safety of beachgoers. Charlie has helped the Westport Lions in the past, and the club greatly appreciates his efforts.
Westport Lions started July by hosting Canada Day and then organized a beach volleyball tournament to raise funds for the beach. Both events were a big success, and the participants enjoyed perfect weather.
On July 20, the Westport Lions hosted Bob Burtch and his bluegrass band at the Lions’ Westfest. Bob is famous for being one of the top mandolin players in North America, and his band of outstanding musicians has been entertaining crowds for years. This free concert is to express the club’s gratitude to the community for its support. Again, Josh Doornekamp, owner of O Aarde Engineered Construction, sponsored this event. This is the third year that Josh has generously funded Westfest. The Westport Lions applaud Josh’s generosity.
During the morning on the same day, six Westport Lions helped the Athens Club manage the gates to their Farmersville Exhibition. It has been a long-standing tradition for the Westport Lions to help out our neighbouring club.
The Reuse and Recycle Centre, located at 5295 Salem Road, continues to do well. It is open every Friday and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Most new items are posted weekly on the R. & R. Centre Facebook page.
The Westport Lions hosted a barbecue luncheon for 49 area seniors at the Lions’ Den on July 25. The next luncheon sponsored by the Lions will be on August 22, and another one will be sometime in September. The Westport Lions decided to organize these luncheons in collaboration with Community & Primary Health Care Unit for Lanark, Leeds and Grenville (CPHC) instead of simply donating to CPHC. This way, the club’s money goes directly to the community.
There are still some $10,000 Elimination Draw tickets available. The tickets are $100.00 each, but only 250 tickets are sold. Several people have formed a group to purchase a ticket, thus distributing the ticket cost. In addition to the grand prize, several $100 prizes will be awarded. If you wish to buy a ticket, ask any Lion or call Dorothy Maynard at 613-273-2079 or Marty Hawkins at 613-531-1710.
