Lion Don Baker conducts vision screen at local schools.
Westport Lions Roar
By Lion Bob Reddick
A team of eight Westport Lions conducted their yearly vision screening at the two Westport elementary schools. The Lions tested for colour blindness and examined the students using a vision chart and the Stereo Fly Test, which determines gross stereopsis and fine depth perception. Of the 35 students tested, only two students received a notice that they should be further examined by an optometrist.
As the Lions were packing up their testing kit, a concerned teacher asked the Lions to test a student who wasn’t scheduled for testing. The Lions unpacked their gear and tested the student, resulting in a recommendation that the student see an optometrist. The students were also informed that, if necessary, the club would provide financial assistance for the purchase of glasses or transportation to the optometrist. The Westport Lions started vision screening in 2009 under the initiative of Lion Jim McGlade.
One can drop off used eyeglasses at the Westport Village Pharmacy, the Rideau Medical Centre in Newboro, the Community Health Centre in Westport, or give to any Lion member. The glasses are urgently needed in Guyana. There is no better gift than the gift of sight.
During the club’s last meeting, Lion Bruce Maynard gave a final report on the successful season of the Reuse and Recycle Centre. Sixteen Lions were involved in the running of the R. & R. Centre, along with an equal number of community volunteers. A total of 1,725 hours has been put into operating the centre, with additional hours needed to close down and organize the stock for next season. Co-managers Lion Bruce Maynard and Jeannette Harper are very appreciative of the support they received from the community this year.
Lion Gary Warriner, chairperson of the Halloween committee, and his helpers will prepare bagged candy for all witches and goblins on October 31. The Lions will start handing out candy at 5:30 p.m. at the corner of Spring and Church Streets in Westport.
