Westport Lions Roar

The Westport and Athens Lions Clubs are excited to sponsor a fishing derby for young people under the age of sixteen. The event will occur at the Westport Lions Beach, located at 63 Mountain Road in Westport on Saturday, Feb. 15. The fishing tournament is free, and will run from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Hotdogs and hot chocolate will be provided free of charge. All participants must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. A fishing licence is not required for this event because it is on Family Day weekend.
There will be numerous prizes awarded for the largest and longest perch, crappy, pike, and pickerel, as well as unique prizes for the prettiest and the strangest fish. A special prize will be given to the fish closest to the hidden weight determined by Lion members.
Lional the Lion will make a guest appearance to help make the event festive. Also, weather permitting, the Lions will scrape off a section of the lake for people to skate, so make sure you bring your skates.
Participants can register on the day of the event; however, to assist with planning, the clubs ask you to pre-register by e-mailing Lion Todd Evans at g.evans@hotmail.ca or Lion Jim McGlade at mcglade@rideau.net. Your registration must include: the name of participant, date of birth, name of parent or guardian, and e-mail address.
If the event must be cancelled due to weather, updates will be posted on the Athens and Westport Lions Facebook page.
The Westport and Athens Lions clubs have a long history of assisting each other in their fundraising initiatives. This is the first time that the clubs have collaborated to organize an event. There is optimism that more joint initiatives will occur in the future.
