Westport Lions Roar

People often ask members of the Westport Lions what they do, what services and events they organize, and how to become a member. This week I will attempt to answer these questions.
Lions is an international service organization with 1.4 million members in 206 countries who volunteer to make a difference in both local and global communities. The Westport Lions Club is a dedicated group of 30 local members who strive to improve Westport and its surrounding areas.
The Lions’ motto is “We Serve.” Our club members are committed to assisting people in need and enhancing lives through local community service and global health and wellness programs. The Westport Lions Club also supports various global initiatives from Lions Club International. We are always looking for new ways to support the community, so please contact us to share your ideas.
The main services provided by the Westport Lions Club provide are:
- Medical Mobility Service
- Reuse & Recycle Centre
- Lions Club Beach
- Financial support for local groups
- Vision screening in area schools
- Collecting glasses and hearing aids
- Christmas cakes and luncheons for seniors
- Medical equipment loans
- Community garden supporting local Food Bank
The annual events the Westport Lions either participant in, or organize are:
- Canada Day at the Lions’ Beach
- Halloween treats
- Westfest
- Beach volleyball tournament
- Santa Claus parade
- Food bank and toy drives
- EcoFest
- Christmas market
- Cash calendar, $10,000 draw and $1,500 spring draw
- Mobility breakfast at The Cove
- Steak BBQ
- Fish fry
- Pitch-In (community cleanup)
- Diabetes tag day
- Chocolate bunnies for CHEO
The benefits of membership vary from individual-to-individual but here are a few:

• Establish strong roots in your community
• Enjoy personal growth and leadership opportunities
• Build friendships
All Lions Clubs are open to anyone who is interested in volunteering in their community. Lions welcome new members of any race, ethnicity, gender, nationality or religion. Prospective members can join at any time.
To become a member, you need to obtain sponsorship from a current Lion, complete an application form, discuss expectations with the membership chairperson or your sponsor, and attend three general meetings.
