This year, the Westport Lions and the Canada Day Committee are excited to introduce two new attractions at the Lions’ Beach on Canada Day.
Victor Limbeek, known as The Bubble Guy will be at the Lions’ Beach to entertain young and old alike with his amazing, joyful bubbles. Bubble making for Victor started seven years ago when he and his wife were visiting two chemist friends in Kentucky. One day, the two chemists decided to entertain themselves by trying to create giant bubbles. They experimented with various techniques and soap solutions, and under perfect conditions, they once managed to create a bubble that was 60 feet long. The friends shared the recipe for the soap solution and the techniques with Victor. Making these bubbles involves much more than simply pouring dish soap into a bucket and using some string. Victor practised in his backyard near Mallorytown and eventually graduated to performing at the Block House in Brockville and other charity events attended by children.
The type of bubbles Victor creates depends on the wind and how he manipulates the string. If he holds the string in a wide arc, he can produce one giant bubble, about a meter in diameter and sometimes reaching 10 to 20 feet in length. Conversely, holding the string tightly may generate 100 smaller, two-inch bubbles. “The young people want to burst the bubbles,” says Victor, “but the parents and grandparents just want to watch them.”
The other new attraction this year will feature live music provided by Adam Knapp’s original band. The music will be continuous, with Tom Gard’s All-Star Karaoke filling in between sets. Don’t forget to bring a chair and plenty of sunscreen! The festivities at the Lions’ Beach, located at 63 Mountain Road will commence at noon and will run until 5:00 p.m.
As always, the focus at the Lions’ Beach on Canada Day is for the young people. Jessica McTavish of Pixie Pie Face Painting will return, and there will be plenty of beach toys, games, and, of course, sand for children to enjoy.
Winners of the Canada Day Children’s Drawing Contest, Why I’m Proud to be a Canadian will be announced around 2:00 p.m. The contest is open to all children, ages 6 to 12 in Westport and area. Entries will be judged based on originality, artistic merit and creative use of Canadian symbols. Prizes donated by Westport’s Vanilla Bean will be awarded for the top two drawings in each age category. The young artists can drop off their creations at St Edward Catholic School or Rideau Vista Public School no later than Wednesday, June 25, 2025. Further details were published in the June 10th edition of the Review-Mirror and can be found on the Westport Lions Facebook page and website, westportlions.ca
Other events at the beach will include the drawing of the winning ticket for the Lions’ $1,500 Cash Draw sponsored by Rosebush Energies. In addition to $1,500 grand prize, there will be a second prize worth $500 and three prizes of $50 each. The draw will take place at the Beach clubhouse at 4 p.m. Tickets are $10 each and three for $20 and are still available from any Lion and will be sold at the beach on July 1 until 4:00 p.m.
The Westport Lions and the Canada Day Committee wish to thank Ragu Sharma and Circle K who again this year will generously provide free hotdogs, freezies and drinks for the hungry crowd. Also, celebrants at the beach are fortunate that Victor Limbeek is willing to drive from Mallorytown to perform his special magic free of charge.
