Westport Lions Roar
By Lions Peter Minnelli and Bob Reddick
On July 1, hundreds of people gathered at the Westport Lions Beach in perfect weather conditions to celebrate Canada’s 158th birthday. Starting at noon, one of the largest crowds ever flocked to the beach to enjoy live music provided by the Adam Knapp Band and disc jockey Tom Gard of All-Star Karaoke. Artist Jessica McTavish of Pixie Pie Face Painting and Victor Limbeek, known as the Bubble Guy, delighted young people throughout the afternoon. To satisfy the hungry crowd, Lion members and volunteers served over 300 free hotdogs, freezies and drinks primarily donated by Ragu and Raman Sharma of Circle K.
This year’s version of the Westport Lions Canada Day Drawing Contest was a big hit with local children again this year. Over 100 entries from children aged 6 to 12 were received with the theme: Why I am proud to be a Canadian? The judges had a very hard time deciding on the winners as there were an incredible number of excellent entries. The winning entries were:
Age 12 – Kyla Hoogendyk and Gwen Harrison
Age 11 – Iris Giannakouras and Harry Craggs
Age 10 – Julliya Morris and Sierra Willard
Age 9 – Lucy Macleod and Hadley Lynn
Age 8 – Kaitlyn Burns and Ryder Klien-Gunnewick
Age 7 – Aria Hutchings and Tommy Burns
Age 6 – Corbin and Lochlan
Certificates were awarded at the Lions Beach Canada Day and ice cream prizes were given out courtesy of Vanilla Bean, the sponsor of the contest.
The winner of the Westport Lions $1500 Cash Draw, sponsored by Rosebush Energies, was Teddy Steele from Westport. The second prize of $500 went to Perth Road resident Adam Knapp. Janet Mulville, Debbie Adrain and Dr. Julie Brown, all from Westport, won $50 each. In addition, Kevin Hewitt from Newboro and Glen McNichols from Godfrey won $50 gift certificates from Evergreen Golf Course. A special thank you to everyone who bought tickets for this draw.
Lion Craig Jackson is still looking for someone or a couple to clean the beach washrooms on Wednesdays. The job should take half an hour to complete. If you can assist the club, please contact Lion Craig Jackson at 613-913-6777 or by email at craigjackson0110@gmail.com.
