In the spirit of co-operation, the Westport and Athens Lions Clubs are excited to host their second fishing derby for youth under the age of 15. The event will take place at the Westport Lions Beach, located at 63 Mountain Road in Westport on Saturday, Feb. 14. The fishing tournament is free, and will run from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Hot dogs and hot chocolate will be provided free of charge. All participants must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. No fishing licence is needed as it is Family Day weekend.
There will be numerous prizes awarded for the largest and longest perch, crappie, pike, and pickerel, as well as unique prizes for the prettiest and the strangest fish.
Participants can register on the day of the event; however, to assist with planning, the clubs kindly request you to pre-register by e-mailing Lion Todd Evans athenste@myhighspeed.ca or Lion Jim McGlade at mcglade@rideau.net. Your registration must include: the name of participant, date of birth, name of parent or guardian, and e-mail address.
If the event must be cancelled due to the weather, updates will be posted on the Athens and Westport Lions Facebook page. The alternative snow date is Sunday, Feb. 15.
Anyone wishing to help out for this event, please contact Lions Todd Evans or Jim McGlade.
At the same time and location, any young person who did not have the opportunity to get their eyes checked at a local elementary school are welcome to come to the Lions’ clubhouse to get tested. Adults are also welcome to get screened.
The Lions’ team tests for colour blindness and examines people using a vision chart and the Stereo Fly Test, which determines gross stereopsis and fine depth perception. All results are kept strictly confidential, and Lions only make recommendations to get further testing with an optometrist.
Early detection of eye problems is crucial for the well-being of a child. If you suspect your child has eye issues, take action and schedule an appointment with an optometrist. The Westport Lions Club will provide financial assistance for an examination, glasses, or transportation to an optometrist if needed.
On Feb. 14, a young person will not find a better deal; they can have a free hot dog and hot chocolate, catch dinner and at this same time get their eyes checked. The Lions wish everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day!
