Last Friday, Jan. 30 was sunny, clear, but extremely cold. A wind blowing in from Westport Sand Lake over the Lions’ beach added to the bone chilling conditions. It was in this environment, that Lions Dave Blair, Bruce Paterson and Craig Jackson installed a plaque on the gazebo to commemorate the hard work that Lion Smokey Sherwood has made to the Lions’ beach facilities.
The snow was so deep that Lion David Blair first had to clear a path so Bruce and Craig could reach the gazebo to install the plaque. The plaque reads: This gazebo is dedicated to Wayne “Smokey” Sherwood with sincere appreciation for his unwavering dedication, generosity, and tireless service to the Westport Lions Club. Specifically, Smokey has spent countless hours painting the gazebo, remodelling, painting the beach washrooms, installing a donation box and signs, and closing in part of the area below the balcony.
Last summer, when there was a need for a sponsor for Westfest, Lions Marty Hawkins and Smokey paid for the band out of their own pockets.
The Lions that are mentioned above, quietly go about maintaining the Lion clubhouse, garage and property without seeking recognition. The club is lucky to have them as members.
The Elgin Lions Club is also lucky to have Lion Doug Sheffield join their club. Doug will be an outstanding member and brings many valuable skills to the club. Congratulations, Lion Doug.
