Westport Lions Club News

By Lucille Bresee
Despite the slow return of the snowbirds of the Westport Lions Club, there was a fair attendance at the March 14 meeting at the Sand Lake Beach House. After a few minutes at other venues, it was good to be back home at Sand Lake and welcome back their caterer, Jeannette Harper.
In the absence of the president, Lion Jim McGlade, who was attending another meeting, 1st Vice President, Lion Rick Warriner was in the chair.
It was endorsed by the members that all discriminating spending be frozen until September 1st, with the exception of donations to Rideau District High School in Elgin and St. Edward School in Westport until that date.  Any application for donations should be handed in between Sept. 1st and Oct. 1st, 2012 as recommended by the Board of Directors.
During the business portion of the meeting, it was decided that due to the wet ground and arranging property liability insurance at the residence of Lion Don Baker, the collection of metal would be temporarily suspended.
In upcoming events a number of Lions members will participate in a Curling Bonspiel in Gananoque on March 25th and Lion Gary Warriner has information on this. The Club will subsidize the cost of this to a limit determined.
Also, the meeting was made aware of a Lions Club Invitational Golf Tournament, to be held at Evergreen Golf Course  on June 7th, 2012, more information will be available. Invitations will be sent to Lions Club in District A-4 and remaining spaces will be available to interested local golfers.
The popular annual fundraiser, the Calendars with the scenes of places of local interest from this area are being put together by Lions Jim McGlade, Mike McIntyre, Bob Weir and Don Baker. These always sell well and appeal to both local residents and visitors to visit family or old friends.
The April Red Cross Blood Donor Clinic will be held on April 10th, 2012 at the Royal Canadian Legion No. #542 on County Rd. 10 and will be staffed by Lions members to assist.
The Lions Mobility Van continues to be busy and recently made trips to Kingston, Perth and Carleton Place.
