Westport Lions Roar
By Lion Bill Garland
Canada Day marks the annual celebration of the birth of our country. In Westport where both the local residents and visitors come together to mark this important birth date, it is also the date of the Westport Lions Club Spring Draw.
The Spring Draw is the annual fundraiser that provides the economic resources to operate the Lions Beach on Sand Lake. The Westport Lions rely on the generous support from the community to help provide this important recreational resource. Don Baker and his property team of Lions manicure the beach, lawns as well as clean the washrooms and deck facilities.
Spring draw funds enable Don’s team to repair the ongoing erosion caused by water flow down the mountain and across the lawn and the beach, as well as providing the liability insurance and the equipment resources needed to operate and maintain a public beach. Together, the Westport Lions and the Westport / Rideau Lakes community make the Sand Lake Park available for use free of charge for everyone. On Canada Day there were hundreds of people enjoying the water and sand at the Lions Beach.
The 2018 Spring Draw proved successful in raising the funds necessary to operate the beach. Thanks you to all our generous supporters.
The winners for this year’s draw were:
$ 1,500 prize – Bob O’Connell of Westport
$ 150 prize – Wayne Mulville of Westport
