Westport Lions Club newest member, Wayne (Smokey) Sherwood.
Westport Lions Roar
By Lion Bob Reddick
To paraphrase an old saying: you can take the boy out of the village but you cannot take the village out the boy, applies to Wayne (Smokey) Sherwood, our newest Westport Lions Club member.
Wayne is a retired member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) who moved back to Westport, “a village he grew up in and so dearly loves.” He has worked at the nuclear generating station at Darlington, the casino in Gananoque, and what was formerly called Dupont.
Wayne has many fond memories growing up in Westport. Chasing American girls at the beach, helping to cut the grass at the beach and playing hockey and baseball. “Westport is and was a great place to grow up in”, says Smokey.
When Wayne was asked why he joined the Westport Lions Club, he responded that he thought it was time to pay back what the village and the Lions club did for him growing up. He has not forgotten that the Lions often paid for ice time at the rink and provided money to purchase softballs and bats. Smokey reminisced the times the Lions brought in the circus and organized country jamborees. “It’s only right to join this wonderful organization to carry on the torch of kindness and compassion,” he says.
