It is amazing how quickly our daily lives are changing. I originally wrote this little column Saturday and by Sunday evening I had to change much of its content.

On Sunday evening, President Wayne Bent issued a statement that suspended the mobility van program until it is safe to continue. Also, all Lion meetings and functions are cancelled, including the mobility van brunch slated for April 5th. For the membership, there will be no Lion bowling night in Elgin, no convention in Cornwall and no dinner meeting at the Tangled Garden in Westport. A decision regarding when activities will resume will depend on the COVID-19 situation.

Lion Michael Harris and his wife Judith have been working diligently in sorting out documentation left in the club’s basement to create an archive and a book of Lionism for the Westport Lions Club. They are requesting anyone that has information, photos or stories about the club to please call 613-273 -5789 and leave a message, or email the club at westportontariolions@gmail.com. Any information would be appreciated especially before 1953.

At our last meeting, Lion Mary Hawkins who is spearheading the 55-inch Big Screen TV Draw to be held on April 11th at the Lost Penny Pub reported that over half the tickets have been sold. The tickets are $20 each and can be bought from any Lion’s member. Only 200 tickets are being sold so your odds of winning are excellent. It was suggested that the funds generated from this draw could go towards building a children’s playground on the beach property.

The club decided that it would not host the Governor’s Golf Tournament this year. Instead, Lion René Reynen will organize a fun, community tournament. The date and details will be available in the future.

A motion was passed that the club joins the group “What’s On Westport.” Lions Paul Thorp and Bob Reddick will represent and coordinate sending club’s events and activities to the site’s administrator.

Lion Rick Warriner reported that this year’s annual fish fry will be at the clubhouse on June 27th starting at 4:00 p.m. for takeout.

The Westport Lions Club wishes everyone good health and to take the necessary precautions in this time of uncertainty.
