The Westport Lions Club under the initiative of Lion Michael Harris has started a new endeavour that we are calling Lions Social Connections. It is well documented that connectedness is critical to our well being during this pandemic.

Our goal is to reach out to members of our community that may be suffering from loneliness of self–isolation. Our target group is mainly the elderly who may not have family close by. A Lion member would contact the person likely by telephone to check if they require any assistance, or just to chat. Lion members are ready to help in any way they can.

If you, or someone you know that could benefit from a call, please contact Lions Wayne Bent at 613-273-5791 or Michael Harris at 613-277-9494. Alternatively, you could email the club at westportontariolions@gmail.com.

On a national level, Lion Clubs across Canada have stepped up to help during the COVID 19 pandemic by making donations to their local food bank, helping to deliver groceries, prescriptions, medical supplies and providing service where needed.

A good example of providing a needed service is the Lions of Nova Scotia. Through Lions Quest, they have responded to the needs of young people after the mass shooting in their province.   Nova Scotia Lions have distributed 170 – Where is Robert? – Grief kits to the children and grandchildren of the victims of the tragic shooting as well as the students of Debert Elementary School who lost their teacher. These grief kits include a book, and a memory box designed to aid parents and educators to help a child cope with death.  The book entitled – Where is Robert? – by Christine Dernederlnden helps children understand what happens when someone passes and that it’s okay to have different emotions.

Lions Quest Canada is a life skills and prevention program designed to foster positive youth development. Lions Quest has developed educational programs and materials to help young people make a smooth transition to adulthood and help them reduce negative risk-taking behaviours. This registered charitable organization has provided leadership, knowledge and resources with schools, parents and communities for over 30 years.
