On January 13, 2021, Lion Michael R. Harris was sworn in as the 70th president of the Westport Lions Club.
Michael was born in Brighton, on the south coast of England and earned his engineering degree before immigrating to Canada in 1975. His career in IT focused on various aspects of telecommunications.
Lion Michael and his wife, Judith have owned a cottage on Narrows Bay at the southern end of the Big Rideau Lake for over 33 years. They spent many weekends upgrading their second home and improving the grounds to fulfill their passion for gardening.
He got his first taste of Lionism by helping to build the present clubhouse in the spring and summer of 1991. Michael’s primary motivation for joining the club was precipitated by his neighbour John Geils, who was a member of a Lions Club in Monsey, New York. In 2015, Michael decided to join the Westport Lions and remembers walking into a general meeting unannounced and being asked by then- president Don Baker, “How can we help you?” The rest, as they say, is history.
Since joining the club, Lion Michael has acted as medical mobility dispatcher, where he instituted significant efficiency improvements. As chairperson of Christmas Cakes for seniors, Lion Michael introduced the option for seniors to pick up their cake at the clubhouse so they would have an opportunity to socialize. Most recently, he stepped down from being the club’s secretary so he could be president.
We wish Lion Michael success as president as he leads the club out of the pandemic and into better times ahead.
