Westport Lions Roar
By Lion Bob Reddick
On July 23rd, the Westport Lions Club enjoyed their first get-together in 19 months by enjoying an outdoor barbecue. Special thanks to Lion Marty Hawkins and his able helpers Pat Reddick and Jeannette Harper for preparing the food. Local musician Shawn McCullough supplied much appreciated entertainment.
At the last executive meeting, President Michael Harris gave Lions Dave Blair, Dale Lyons, and Don Baker a big thank you for cleaning up the old trailer park property.
Lion Bill Garland reminded the membership that the $1,500 Cash Draw will happen this Saturday, July 31st, at the Lions Beach. Tickets are available from Lion members selling them at Kurdrinko’s, Circle K and outside the post office.
Lion Marty Hawkins is planning a one-day, outdoor music festival at the Lions’ Beach on Saturday, August 28th. The event will run from noon to 6:00 p.m., with Sunday, August 29th scheduled as a rain day.
Local musicians will play from the lower deck to an audience sitting on the lawn and beach. Josh Doornekamp from Aarde Construction has generously agreed to sponsor the festival. The Club will secure a sound manager to provide technical sound support for all musicians, thus eliminating lengthy set-ups between bands. Local musician Shawn McCullough has agreed to book a slate of quality bands for the event.
There will be no entrance fee for the music festival, but there will be a 50/50 draw to help cover expenses. Lions Treats (our canteen) will be open to provide ice cream bars, chips, and drinks. The Club will also sell hamburgers, hotdogs and pulled pork sandwiches. Please bring your own lawn chair.
Lion Marty expects between 400 to 500 people will attend the event. The Club will provide busing from parking areas for your convenience (more details to come).
This quality music festival is the Westport Lions Club’s way of thanking the community for their tremendous support during the past year and a half of COVID-19.
