The Westport Lions are doing their best to spread Christmas joy to area residents.

On Saturday, December 10, the Westport Lions delivered 305 Christmas cakes to Westport and Newboro area senior citizens.  The seniors are so appreciative that it brings as much joy to the Lions delivering the cakes as the seniors receiving them. A special thank you to Janet Mulville, Jeannette Harper, and Dorothy Maynard for revamping the lists for the drivers’ routes.  These lists must be updated yearly.

To receive a cake, you must live in Westport or Newboro area and be 65 or older. The club allows one cake per household.   If you did not receive a cake and wish to be on the list for next year, you have a couple of options.  You could write the required information down on a piece of paper and send it to: Westport Lions Club, Attention: Cakes for Senior Committee, P.O. Box 428, Westport, ON K0G 1X0, or you could email the same information to: westportontariolions@gmail.com.

Please print the required information in capital letters:  Last Name; First Name; Apartment; House Number and Street; Township; Postal Code; Phone Number.

The club received a request to sponsor a bus to Kingston for local seniors to have an outing. Lion Marty Hawkins, who chaperoned the group on December 14, remarked, “School buses have come a long way since I road them as a student.  I was pleasantly surprised. I wouldn’t want to go to Montreal or Toronto in one, but it was much smoother than I expected, it wasn’t bad at all.”  The seniors had enough time to shop, have lunch and get their picture taken with Santa.

The club enjoy their annual Christmas dinner at The Cove on December 15 with a wonderful turkey dinner with all the trimmings and live music.  The Westport Lions have several traditions, but one of the nicest is to invite all our deceased partners of members who have passed away to our Christmas celebration.  This year Marlene Thake, Betty McInnis, Pat McGregor, and Inger Stewart attended.

The Westport Lions Club is proud to announce another successful Christmas Toy Drive. Thanks to community volunteers for sorting, organizing, and distributing the more than 500 toys that were donated by members of this generous community. Thanks to their efforts there will be 30 children from nine families who will have a Merry Christmas morning this year.

Each family received a box of chocolates, a box of candy canes and a gift certificate from the dollar store with which to buy wrapping paper and gift tags.

The gift bags for the children contained an average of 10 gifts, including a stuffy, books and pyjamas. There was a surplus of gifts that we will store at the club house and that will be available throughout the year for families feeling the strain of providing birthday gifts.

Please contact the Lions Club, or Jan Gagnon (613-200-7476) to make arrangements.

Thanks to Kudrinko’s for acting as a collection depot for the toys.  The club appreciates being able to have a central, accessible drop-off location.

The Westport Lions Club wishes everyone Merry Christmas, good health, and happiness in 2023.  Thank you for your support.
