On Sunday, February 12 the Westport Lions hosted a fundraiser for Robbie Murphy who is battling cancer.  Organizer, Lion Marty Hawkins was over the moon with the help and support he received from the community.  Once again, the generosity of the community proved to be outstanding. Marty wants to thank Faye Morris, Bev Lewis, Charleigh Hawkins, Betty McInnis, and Michelle Morgan for their assistance in preparing for this event.

A special thank you to the businesses that donated gifts to be raffled off.  Dale and Loretta Younge contributed a huge gift basket of beer and coolers.  A chainsaw, oil, and fuel were given by Rikki’s Repairs and Westport Home Hardware and a weed whacker was provided by Herlehy Home Building Centre.  The Westport Lions Club wishes Rob success in his battle with cancer.

The February 8th meeting of the Westport Lions Club started in a celebratory tone when volunteers and members were thanked for all the small but essential jobs to keep the club running smoothly.  In any organization, there are hundreds of little jobs, and not so little, that get done quietly and without fanfare. For example, fixing equipment, cleaning the hall, updating plaques, changing our sign, and dealing with correspondence and questions from the public.

The Westport Lions have completed the application for Club Excellence Award sponsored by Lions Clubs International.  District Governor Susan Tunnicliffe encouraged the club to apply and will forward the application to LCI.  The Westport Lions meet all the criteria, including membership growth, submitting membership and service data to LCI, maintaining, and adding service activities, attending officer training, and having effective marketing.

Lion Michael Harris informed the membership that our club will introduce Ken Rose and Paul Millar to the Elgin Lions Club for them to present the concept of Westport Shares.   “Westport Shares is a grassroots charitable organization that provides crowd-sourced financial assistance to residents experiencing a one-off financial crisis. Westport Shares operates with a small board that assesses requests in a simplified methodology which enables the funds to be distributed quickly.” (Westport Shares Handbook Policies and Documents)
