Westport Lions Roar

All Lions clubs are doing great things. By visiting other clubs, Lions can learn how to do things more efficiently, differently and obtain good ideas that can help their club progress.
Westport Shares
A group of Westport Lions visited the Elgin Lions Club on March 6. One of the reasons for the visit was to accompany Westport’s founding member of Westport Shares, Ken Rose. Westport Shares provides crowd-source financial assistance to residents who are experiencing a one-off financial crisis. The program is so successful it was felt that perhaps other communities might want to start their own sharing program. Ken outlined the purpose of Westport Shares, how it is organized, and provided administrative documentation on how to operate the program. Ken’s presentation was well received by the Elgin Lions Club.
Lion Joe Donovan from the Elgin group entertained both clubs with two ballades he composed. One was about our Medical Mobility Services, and the other was a hockey spoof featuring Lion Jim McGlade. The Westport group was so impressed that they inquired if he could entertain at our annual Medical Mobility Service breakfast that will be held at The Cove on Sunday, April 16th, from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.
Glasses for Guyana
Lion Jim McGlade reported that he delivered 200 pairs of glasses to Kemptville that will be sent to Georgetown, Guyana. In the last couple of years, area Lions have sent over 2,000 pairs of glasses to Guyana.
All types of used glasses can be dropped off at the Westport Village Pharmacy, The Rideau Medical Centre in Newboro, Country Roads Community Health Centre in Westport, or any Lion member. Glass cases are not required because of the additional weight and cost of shipping.
The Westport Lions Club thanks Joel McCullough and his supervisor Dwain Smith for plowing out the club’s parking lot after the heavy snowfall.
Recruitment event April 12, Mobility Service breakfast April 16
A couple of dates to mark on your calendar. In addition to the MMS breakfast on April 16, the club will host a Member/Volunteer Recruitment and Activity event on Wednesday, April 12.
Reuse and Recycle Centre Opens
On April 28 and 29 the Reuse and Recycle Centre will open its doors for the summer season.
The Westport Lions will also organize PITCH-IN on April 29 to collect garbage along area roads.
Finally, at the end of April, the club will disburse funding for financial requests received by the first of April. For funding application forms go to our website westportlions.ca. Details for all the above events will be given later.
