The Westport Lions’ May 10 meeting was a time to celebrate the service of Lions Jim McGlade, Marty Hawkins, and Wayne Bent.  All three gentlemen received a standing ovation from the membership.  Past District Governor Jean Lauziere was present to hand out the awards.

Lion Wayne Bent received the International Leadership Award from Past International President Dr. Jung-Yul Chois for his distinguished leadership over the years.  Wayne traditionally would have received this prestigious award at the A-4 District convention in 2021. The convention was cancelled because of Covid, so Past District Governor Jean Lauziere presented it to Wayne at the club’s meeting. This award is the third highest given out by Lions International, Melvin Jones is second, and The Lions Humanitarian Award is the top award.

Lion Jim McGlade received his 50-year service chevron.  Jim’s passion over the years has been sight and hearing, but he has served in all administrative functions of the club and is an avid supporter of many of the club’s activities.   Lion Jim has no plans of slowing down and will be our new secretary starting July 1.

Lion Marty Hawkins received his 30-year service chevron.  Many people know Marty for his incredible ability to sell tickets and calendars, but he is also quietly involved in many other club activities.

Vice-president Dave Blair accepted the 75-year charter certificate from Past Governor Jean Lauziere.  The Westport Lions Club was formed in 1946.

Other members were congratulated for their service: Lion Barb Fritz for updating and refreshing the club’s plaques, Lions Dale Lyons and Wayne Bent for planting oak trees at the beach, Lion Dave Blair for organizing the Medical Mobility Service breakfast, along with the generous support of co-owner of The Cove Lion Terry Cowan and community volunteers Tracy and Byran Colford.

A motion was passed to donate $11,850 to 15 organizations in the spring disbursements.

Upcoming events are the Westport Lions Club yard sale at the Lions’ beach on Saturday, May 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and the club’s fish fry on Saturday, June 10.  Takeout is available from 4 to 5 p.m., or you can dine inside the clubhouse or al fresco from 5 to 7 p.m.  Tickets are $20 each and can be obtained from any Lion member or by contacting the club on their Facebook page.
