Westport Lions Roar

The Westport Lions wrote cheques totalling $20,000 last week, but that amount needs some explaining. First, the Lions held their $10,000 draw on Sat., Oct. 10 at the Lions’ Den. There is always great fun and drama when Lion Marty Hawkins reads out the numbers in this elimination draw, especially when people are in attendance and are still in the draw. This year, three Brus brothers were among the last ten tickets drawn. Bill and Ron Brus indicated that they would not split the grand prize, which could have led to family tension. Brother John Brus chose to split the grand prize if he was one of the last two tickets drawn. However, Bill and Ron were eliminated, but John held the third-to-last ticket drawn, which netted him $100.00. Other $100 winners were Phil Younge, who had the first ticket drawn; Jason and Dayna Norris owned 130th ticket drawn; Brent McInnis held the fourth-to-last ticket. Charlie Norwood, a long-time Lion supporter, possessed the fifth-to-last ticket but unfortunately was not in the prize money. The last two tickets drawn belonged to Jeff Burt and Ryan Patterson jointly, and the other ticket was held by Paul McNichols. Because Jeff and Ryan, and Paul indicated they would split the grand prize, each ticket received $5,000. Thanks to the people who bought tickets, and especially the ones who attended the draw. The highs and lows of participants hearing the numbers drawn always makes for good fun.
In addition, treasurer Lion Craig Jackson wrote cheques totalling $9,600 to 11 different organizations for the club’s fall disbursements. It is hoped that each group will send a representative to the club’s next general meeting on Wed., Oct 28 to receive their cheque. For the club’s spring disbursements, organizations will find the Application for Funding Requests on our website, westportlions.ca. The next disbursement deadline will be April 1, 2027.
