Lions Spring Cash Draw set for May

By Lucille Bresee

As the Westport Lions Club shifts into high gear to prepare for the busy summer months, Lions Don Baker has announced that the Spring, Cash Draw is all set for May 24, 2014. It will take place as usual at the corner of Spring and Church Streets and prize money offered is: first prize $1,500; second prize $500; and third prize is $250. and tickets are available at Murphy’s Shop from Betty Anne or any Lions member. The main objective is to have finances available to hire a student for the summer months and be able to care for the property and make sure that this popular facility remains clean and beautiful for those enjoying the area. Thousands come to this Lions Club beach property to enjoy all the area has to offer, both winter and summer.
Over the winter, Lion Frank Huth painted the interior, offering a sparkling new Club House for the local Club and those wishing to use the facilities for various functions. Caterers Wayne and Jeannette spearheaded a campaign to raise funds through dinners which completely paid for all materials used, leaving the Club free of any charge. These dinners were very popular and they were able to purchase much needed equipment, including cutlery and furniture for use at the Club House over the coming months.
The potential sale of part of the Sand Lake property to the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority has led the Club to seek a severance. This portion of the Lions property is familiar to hikers and includes part of the Rideau Trail. It would ensure the ability of the Club to continue serving this community so efficiently as in the past.
The Lions Club Mobility Van continues to serve this community well, with Lions volunteer drivers at the controls as they enable the people who find it difficult to keep doctors appointments in nearby centres almost impossible, in fact there have been very few people in this community not touched by this caring service. There is a great need for more volunteer drivers so it is hoped people will step up and offer their service to fill this need.
The date for the much anticipated annual “Fundraiser” – the Colford/Adrain  fresh syrup, with all the goodies has been set for April 13th an is manned by family members to raise funds for the Lions Mobility Van.
