Lions Honour Top Volunteers

Westport Lions Roar                       By Bob Reddick                            July 20/17

A good example of a random act of kindness happened at the beach this past week. While Lion Don Baker was raking up seaweed from the beach, a young man that attends Rideau District High School approached Don to offer to help him while his friends went for a swim. The willingness of this young man to pitch in and help really made Don’s day. This kind gesture is solid proof that the young people do care about our community and are willing to help out.

Lion Michael Harris was chosen this year’s Lion of the Year. Lion Michael is chairperson and dispatcher for the mobility buses and is chairperson of the distribution of Christmas cakes to seniors. Dispatching drivers is a very time sensitive task involving many hours coordinating drivers with clients to get them to their medical appointments on time. The number of requests has doubled this year to eight to ten requests per week. So far this year, one hundred and eighty-one requests have resulted in the vans travelling sixteen thousand, two hundred and eighty-five km., taking six hundred and eighty–seven hours. With this increased number of requests, the Lions club does not have sufficient drivers to meet the demand. The Westport Lions Club is sending out a plea for additional volunteer drivers. If you are interested in helping us out, please call 613-273-5789 and leave a message, or email the club at westportontariolions@gmail.com.

Do not forget our fundraising roast beef dinner this Sunday, July 23rd at the beach house starting at 5:00 p.m. The cost is $15.00 per person. Contact Wayne Bent at 613-273-5791 for tickets.
