Lions Beach a busy spot this summer

Beach volleyball players enjoyed the sun before the storm at the beach last Saturday.

Historically the Westport Lions Club breaks for the summer, but with so much happening this July and August there was a need to get together each month to plan.

At our general meeting held on August 9th, Bob Reddick gave a report on the Rock the Beach Volleyball tournament. He thanked Dave Blair, Don Baker, Bill Garland, Chris Hartley and Rick Warriner for their help in organizing and running the tournament. Eleven teams, plus family and friends showed up last Saturday to enjoy the day in Westport. Several visitors commented to Lions volunteers that they would come back to Westport to canoe and kayak and spend the day in our lovely town. The Kingston teams were so impressed with our facilities that they asked if they could rent our volleyball courts to run their own tournament here next year. The more people we can bring into town the better it is for all businesses.

The young people played through the rain but when it started to thunder they sought refuge under the protection of our balcony. After the storm, the players pitched in to rake the sand back onto the courts and divert the water away from the beach. We were very impressed with their politeness and their youthful appreciation for our canteen and facilities. All the money raised from these tournaments goes directly into maintaining our facilities. In addition, we continue to receive support for such events from local businesses like Kudrinko’s and Duncan’s Sales & Service.

The free CPHC luncheon for senior citizens in the Westport area has been rescheduled to Thursday, September 14th.

Two recent fundraising events were very successful and well supported: a roast beef dinner, and the canteen at the orienteering competition held on Foley Mountain. A special thank you to Jeannette Harper and Wayne Bent who organized the roast beef dinner, and Marty Hawkins and his helpers who managed the orienteering canteen. The Club decided in lieu of holding bingos we would have a series of fundraising dinners and events. Our next fundraiser is a chicken barbecue being held this Saturday, August 19th from 5-7 pm. Enjoy the MUSICwestport festival and then come to the beach for a complete chicken dinner. Take out will be from 4-5 pm. The cost is $15 per dinner.

Mark your calendar: September 2nd is the Westport Lions Club annual $10,000 draw. There will be a free barbecue, entertainment and prizes from noon until 2 pm. The big elimination draw starts at 3 pm with only 250 tickets printed. You can obtain tickets for either event from any Lions member.

The beach continues to be heavily used and it’s nice to see families and groups take pleasure in using the beach area. It makes all the hard work of keeping the beach area clean and seaweed free, mowing the grass and cleaning the washrooms worthwhile. The Club would like to thank the public for their help in keeping the beach clean. On our daily walkabouts around the grounds there is very little garbage that needs to be picked up.
