This past weekend Lion Bruce Maynard and Tom Myatt distributed 2,000 gypsy moth lures to hundreds of residents of Westport, South Frontenac and Rideau Lakes at the Lions’ Reuse & Recycle Centre.  The Westport Lions Club, Wolfe Lake Association, Westport Outdoor Association and Devil Lake Association worked together to deliver this environmentally safe solution to our gypsy caterpillar infestation at no cost to the property owner.  Hopefully, the lures will significantly reduce next year’s population and help save our trees.

A big shout out to Lion Bruce for his leadership in this project.  Lion Bruce is expecting more lure inventory. The pickup dates and times will be publicized on the Westport Lions Facebook page and our website (westportlions.ca).

Lion Marty Hawkins had a positive experience selling $1500 Cash Draw tickets in front of the Circle K.  A gentleman bought $20.00 worth of tickets and told Marty not to move.  He then went into the Circle K, and when he came out, he gave Marty $100 and told him to give free tickets to the next ten ticket buyers.  When Marty explained to another gentleman that his tickets were complimentary from a previous purchaser, the second gentleman said, “I will buy my tickets and here is another $100.”  Marty says, “In all the years I have been selling tickets this has never happened before.”

The washrooms at the Westport Lions Beach were opened this past weekend.  The Club is still looking for reliable, dependable volunteers to help clean the changing rooms. Volunteers would need to open and clean the changing rooms/washrooms one day a week and do a quick walk around the property to pick up any garbage.

The club will provide all the cleaning supplies. The total time required is approximately 30 minutes—the beach is usually clean. In the last three years, not one cleaner reported a mess.

The Westport Lions are happy to accommodate your schedule. If you clean in the morning, you could start any time, but it would be best to have the washrooms open by 10:00 a.m. In the evening, we would prefer the washrooms not be cleaned and locked up before 7:00 p.m.

If you can help the Westport Lions Club maintain our beautiful beach, please call Lion Bob Reddick at 613-273-3499 or 613-583-2062 or email breddick@rideau.net. If you leave a message, please include your contact information and your preferred time and day for cleaning.

In other news, a group of Lions helped out at the second pop-up vaccination clinic held this past Monday by setting up tables and providing security. Finally, congratulations to Joan Wright from Newboro for winning $500 in the Canada Day calendar draw.
