“I knew it wasn’t a mistake when I saw my name on the sign,” says Charlotte Thompson as she entered the parking lot of Westport Lions Beach. Charlotte had just received a call telling her that she had won $5,000, her share of the Lions $10,000 draw. “I have been telling Marty (Hawkins) for years that if I didn’t win, I wouldn’t buy another ticket, but I always do,” says Charlotte. Betty McGinnis, who sold the winning ticket and was in attendance was just as excited as Charlotte.
Charlotte shared the top prize with Tracy Colford from Westport. When Tracy’s daughter, Brook, was asked if she expected to be taken out for dinner with her mother’s winnings, Brook nodded and replied, “A nice, expensive dinner.”
Tracy and her husband, Bryan Colford, have been long-time supporters of the Westport Lions Club. Each year, along with The Cove, Tracy and Bryan add thousands of dollars to Lions’ Medical Mobility service with their fundraising breakfast.
Both winners indicated on their ticket that they would split the $10,000 if they were one of the last two tickets drawn. Tracy’s ticket was the second last ticket drawn, and Charlotte held the final ticket removed from the bin.
Other $100 prize winners were:
Eleanor Bresee was the first person to be eliminated. Janet Mulville and Patti Mueller were holders of the 100th ticket drawn. The fourth last ticket drawn belonged to last year’s winner, Lisa Colford. The third last ticket drawn was owned by Cora and Charleigh Hawkins and their Nan.
The crowd enjoyed the suspense of the event and the music of Gord Barnes who entertained them by playing different genres of music between batches of tickets drawn. Lion Dorothy Maynard and her team kept the draw running smoothly, and Marty Hawkins made being eliminated fun with his wit and humour as he announced the tickets drawn.
It was observed by several Lion members that many ticket holders were also volunteers for the club. The Westport Lions Club wish to thank all volunteers and ticket holders for their support.
