Westport Lions Beach Complex was the site of Westport’s 6th annual Beach Volleyball tournament on Saturday. Five competitive teams played 18 games vying for the title of Westport Lions 2018 Beach Volleyball champion.
Thanks to all the teams and participants that made the 2018 event a huge success. Teams from Westport, Kingston and Kemptville came to the shores of Westport’s Sand Lake to compete for the 2018 Westport Lions Beach Volleyball championship.
Kingston area teams Ryatt Volleyball, Beach Bums and Booties and the Beach along with Kemptville’s Team Goose Shot came to Westport to challenge the local Spiked Rum Bums team. This year’s tournament had an international flavour with players from South Africa, Bermuda and China participating.
Saturdays 2018 Westport Lions Club Tournament was the 3rd volleyball tournament played this summer on Lions Beach. With almost daily pick-up recreational volleyball games, the Lions Beach Volleyball facility is very well used.
All teams played 4 round robin games. In round robin action Ryatt Volleyball ranked first with 14 points, Beach Bums and Team Goose Shot tied for 2nd place with 10 points followed by Booties and the Beach and Spiked Rum Bums.
The playoffs were the best 2 out of 3 matches. Team Goose Shot defeated Westport’s Spiked Rum Bums in Quarter Final action. Kingston teams Booties and the Beach battled Beach Bums in a 3 game Quarter Final with Beach Bums fighting through to victory. Ryatt Volleyball defeated Beach Bums in their semi-final match and Team Goose Shot outlasted Booties and the Beach in the other semi-final. The combination of high temperatures, blazing sun and high tempo volleyball action certainly challenged the endurance of all competitors.
Ryatt Volleyball and Team Goose shot squared off in the championship match. Both Ryatt and Team Goose Shot narrowly won final games requiring a 3rd match to decide the championship. Ryatt Volleyball prevailed as the last team standing. At the end of the final, players from both teams headed to the water to recoup after their grueling battle.
Congratulations to the Ryatt Volleyball team members Marben Espejo, Yannick Plante, Logan Morris and Lindsay Burtch for winning the title of Westport Lions Volleyball Champions for the 2nd year in a row.
Fun and sportsmanship is the focus of this event and it was very evident that every player contributed to the enjoyment of participants and spectators. The Lions Beach was crowded all day thanks to the sun, heat and volleyball.
